jeyes or savona(soft soap) for red mite
« on: June 11, 2008, 16:41 »
Just wondering what to spray to help control the dreaded mite which has appeared en mass in the coop.

I have a load of savona which I spray on aphids and wondered whether this has the same properties as something like poultry shield?

I've put frontline on the chooks as recommended by someone on an earlier post.

I'd like to know that answer too as our chicken shed which has to chickens currently has an infestation.

I really need help.  We want to get some 12 week or pullets, but would rather erradicate the mites first.
new to hens
Thanks

You need to use a product recommended to eradicate the red mite otherwise the problem will just get worse.
A good one is "Poultry Shield" These are very good suppliers.....
http://www.regencypoultry.com/shoparea.asp?p=770ce6fc-1c44-4a66-a36c-915c0de1fe16

Firstly you will need to give the coop a thorough clean then with a spray gun completely drench every nook and cranny -including joints perches etc with poultry shield then allow to dry. When dry add a good dusting of diatom(or mite-ex same thing dont use a repellent though as you have red mite) powder to the nest box and the ends of the perch. Check when dark with a torch to see any crawling around.
A week later do the whole thing again to ensure that you have got all of them. Then keep on top on it by regulary spraying with poultry shield or something similar.
Also to help boost the chooks as red mite are very debilitating, start a course of vits for a week added to their drinking water something like poultry boost will help.
Hope this helps !

Thank you very much.  I've used the mite spray, but they are still there - prob eggs hatching, so I've bought the shield and other bits too - good website thanks.

I am going to try get rid of them before new chickens arrive.  thank god there are no chickens in it at the moment.

I presume I will never 100% get rid of them, but the powder will help to control?  or will they go 100% and be kept at bay with powder?

I had chickens before, but the fox got them last month and I'd only had them 6 months.  We'd been using the powder, so we'd never seen the mite before.  We decided to make a pen to be more secure from the fox and since then the mite has arrived, despite no chickens and a really good clean of the coup.  IT is only on, the coup though.  How does it happen?

Sorry I've highjacked this thread!

Last year when mine got it I painted the whole of the inside with paraffin that seemed to kill the little *, I also put crawling insect powder under the joints where the perch sits.

poultry shield it is then. wasn't sure if the savona would do the same thing?

i have the barrier red mite powder but is that only to be used to prevent getting mite in the first place?

this whole product business gets very confusing, :?

I don't mind forking out to buy them if I need them but don't want to end up with lots of products that all do the same thing if I don't need them!

i don't mind you hijacking the thread blossom, i was getting lonely waiting for a reply!

am tempted to try paraffin like richy but how long would you have to keep the chooks out?

Left mine out for about 1/2 a day it dries or is absorbed into the wood pretty quick, you only need a light coat to kill 'em enough so it runs a little as you put it on with a brush just like painting it, make sure you get it into the nooks and crannies. I sometimes put the blow torch over the perch ends just "to make sure" .
