I am growing 4 different types of peppers, chillies and sweet peppers in the same spot and have heard that you can get some cross pollination,  i.e  a red hot bell pepper ?.

Is this true from anyone's experiences ?

Also I'm growing some Padrone Peppers which I'm told are the equivalent of pepper Russian Roulette anyway with one in ten being red hot,how does this happen. ?

You will probably find its the other way round, a hot pepper with no heat. Yes capsicums cross pollinate all to easy and you may be dissapointed with some of the results.

It is the bit I like most, getting a cross.

You could always do the cotton bud thing and make sure they only breed with whom you wish.
If it rots compost it
If it burns burn it
If it is chocolate eat it

yep I had some VERY strange results last year... what were supposed to be standard cayenne ended up bloated and heat free and for once I didn't get the seeds mixed up and could only put it down to having them next to my peppers.

I understand that it is most likely outdoors where bug life gets involved and within the same species, also would not affect first year fruit.

Anyhow, I haven't yet managed to grow anything different from my saved seeds, I grow them under cover, mixed.

Pimientos, hey, don't know. Might it have to do with diff level of ripeness?

Sweet peppers in one pot; next to them, chili peppers in another pot. During the summer no noticable heat in the sweet peppers. However, at the end of the summer, at the final harvest. The sweet peppers were extremely small, but extremely "hot". Burned my fingers while slicing them. The taste however, was excellent. Fantastic sauteed in olive oil and placed on friend eggs.

I don't see how cross pollination could have this effect.

Surely the type of pollon would have no effect as the pepper is growen from the parents plants genetics.

I would have thought that the effects of the pollon would not be seen unless the seeds are saved and growen out.

indeed.. some of my chillis were most strange this year... Perhaps they were from bad seed last year and I need to go and string up the person I bought them from :D
