Anaemic pumpkins and courgettes
« on: June 10, 2008, 11:23 »
I planted some pumpkins and courgettes a few weeks ago.  Seem to be growing OK but the leaves on most of them are turning very pale/yellow.  Any suggestions please.  Do they need feeding already?
Cheers

Mine have gone like that, I found that they had aphids under the leaves, I have squished them and now feeding the plants to help them recover.

it could also be the result of a dip in temperature or overwatering.  They should pick up okay, and a liquid feed is a good idea.

My courgettes are a bit pale-looking too...  :(  What kind of feed should I give them  :?:

If you make your own from nettles or comfrey, dilute it down to weak tea before watering, or use seaweed feed.  If really desperate use Babybio or even tomatoe feed (just because it has a photo of tomatoes on the front of the bottle doesn't mean it is exclusive to tomatoes    It will have all the ingredients for a quick fix)

It'd be rare that a few week old plants would need feeding. Where are they, what are they in?

Hi gobs
Sorry if I've given the wrong impression. The seedlings were planted out a couple of weeks ago.
All seeds were planted in seed compost in modules.  After germination, hardened off in a cold frame before planting out  in the allotment a couple of weeks ago  Soil is fairly light and well draining and its a fairly sheltered location. Though all seem to be growing they are getting very pale.

Yes, sorry, I thought that's how old they were.

On light soil, you will need plenty of feeding. Any chance of putting some manure under them?

Might try a handful of pelleted chicked poo round each plant.  See if that perks them up!

Just make sure you don't have a resident fox nearby - the chicken manure attracts them and then they start to dig up the plants to get to the scent (talking from experience here      !)
