Garlic rust
« on: June 09, 2008, 19:42 »
Hello everyone, my garlic has infected with rust. I've sprayed some organic anti-rust stuff, to no avail. How many infected leaves can a plant survive on? I'm a bit nervous about taking off too many. Apsrt from that, they seem very healthy. Thanks in advance, Murray :(

Many infected leaves they can survive, I'd stop taking them off actually.

Let them be, unless 'dying' - in which case bin - only kidding this would be very rare. Might not be a famous crop, but they should be OK, big shame if you were after eating the leaves, but the bulbs should be fine.

Have a look at this, Murray & stop worrying!

I get it every year, but the garlic comes out OK.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Apologies for hijacking your thread Murray.

Is this the rust that you refer to?

I've got over 100 plants looking like this.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

I bought proper garlic for planting for the first time and it is smothered with the stuff, the bulbs are fine but my beautiful plot looks a mess around the garlic.

We planted broad beans next to them and they are very stunted. I did wonder if it was effecting them.
If it rots compost it
If it burns burn it
If it is chocolate eat it

Might do, not the rust, the garlic itself, they said not to grow well together.

However, they might be just fine...

Doh ! Wish I knew about beans and garlic .

I planted my first row of dwarf beans next to the garlic ( covered in rust at present ), to my untrained eyes they seems to develop okay.

They were smothered in black fly two weeks ago, and the ladybirds were eating like mad.

Thanks all. I've taken off about 50%, hope that's not too much! I'll give it a rest now and see what happens.. I must improve my typing.
