What happened to my potatoes?
« on: June 08, 2008, 11:53 »
Planted "very early" potatoes (can't remember name?  No flowera on them but the instructions said ready June... thought I would have a look today....eeeeeek what has happened some of the "potaotes" are the size of a pea (a small pea) some are very large and putrid/total pulp and some look lovely ( just cooking them so don't know what they taste like yet) .....I only dug up three plaqnts..what is it likely to be?

I did see some things wiggling in the ground...like very small thin brown worms????  :(

The 'putrid' ones could well be the original seed spud that you planted. It is natural for them to rot off.

The small ones would grow larger, but your larger ones wouldn't be quite so 'new' spuds.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I thought the "original" just sort of rotted into the ground!  thanks for advice

for those of us fairly new to the game we are used to looking at the graded out  potatoes in the supermarket bags that are all the same size.when we see wot really happens ie there are really small ones in there we think something is wrong.
btw the really small ones used to be called 'pig tates' cos they werent worth bothering with so got thrown into the pig sty for them.interestingly now they are being bagged up and sown as 'salad potatoes' in the supermarket.

On a positive note we have just been offered a greenhouse..for free....so how kind is that (it's a perfectly good greenhouse and this house has a base where a previous occupier had a greenhouse!!     Watch this space...I'm sure I will be coming up with many other daft questions...I'll apologise now...

Make sure you dig up all those teeny tiny spuddlys coz they will produce plants next year if you dont!  I have had to remove several unwanted plants and psuds despite digging the spud bed over two or three times before planting anything else this year!

Yes, we have got loads of 'unwanted' spuds growing from the tiniest bit of potato left in from last year and they are in the middle of this year's onions.  :x
