Mushroom/Fungus - Please help to identify it
« on: June 07, 2008, 17:29 »
This Fungus is growing on an oak tree in my garden. It comes back every year. What is it? Is it poisonous?  Can it be eaten?
Saw something similar that Huge Furry Whitingstall cooked on one of his programmes but cant remember what it was called.

Pretty isn't it    The slugs think it tastes ok :!:
There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.

Should I cut it off and destroy it then? Thought it might be Chicken of the wood and you can eat that.

Now that rather looks like chicken of the woods, but don't eat any fungi without being identified by an expert, even then this one is not to eat when becomes white and old.

Chicken of the Woods

I wouldn't risk it either.  All fungi should be identified by an expert - where's Munty  :?:

it is chicken of the woods .but take a knife cut a piece off and its should smell of rotting wood and feel like cheap chees it may go salmony pink on the edges going creamy its always found on oak ,sweet chestnut yew willow and some fruit tres not many choices to confuse it with anything else that u cant mix it up with unless ur stupid but common sense is needed with any fungi or mushrooms ,,,,,,, incidently malcolm storey is a pal and also author of " Food for Free" .  a great little book for finding hedgerow treats
