Oh God, can't argue with the noisy!!! I got some Campbells as they were described as "fairly quiet". Can't imagine how noisy those meant to be "noisy" are. On the other side I have a black (uncrested) crested girl (its a long story) that is really quiet. Think you just have to pick your breed - apparently muscovies are almost silent. As to the mess, my girls seem to be much less destructive to my veg patch and the grass than my aunts chooks are to hers although went it chucks it down mine ducks make it all quite muddy - more than the aunts hens by o long shot.  Ducks also really benefit from water whatever people say,  but need much less fussy housing and are much hardier and disease tolerent than chicks. Trying to be impartial but still think my ducks rock! Think its horses for courses and that being said still always have a pang when I hear about battery chooks needing rehoming and wish I had some space for them
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

OK, that's getting pretty close ... :)

And Vember ... that's just not fair.  But utterly adorable

Are muscovies good layers?  Actually, might just nip off for a few minutes to do some research ... 8)
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

They are good layers the only snag I think is they can fly rather well?? You may have to clip their wings

But they do make the most adorable wistling noise  and no it is'nt noisey noisey like a bird in a tree I was amazed the first time I heard it :)

Gotta wait now and keep adding to my list for next year

Thought I was happy with my beautiful white Campbells but recently had to get a couple of random ducklings to keep an accidentally solitary one company (evil b*s*a*d magpies  ). Have fallen in love with the most fab black duckling who is currently growing the most amazing irridescent black/green feathers over her down. Will post a pic when I can take one that does her justice.

Just a thought - honest - would one duck be happy if she had chickens to keep her company?

(and before I go to bed must tell you about the conversation just had with OH:

OH:  We are not having ducks

PP:   :)

OH:  We are NOT having ducks

PP:   :)

OH:  OK, I know we are having ducks but I'm going to bed ...

Bless him.  He's already given in on the 'lotment decision this week, and on the 'no we're going to be ruthless with those chickens if they don't lay' decision, and he makes me a lovely cup of tea.  Love him to bits   )

Nite all!  Sweet dreams ...
