I GOTTA LOTTIE

Thanks to a passing comment from nwalch a couple of weeks ago we've just signed on the dotted line for a lovely plot - it's a bit further away from us than we'd intended, and we're staying on the waiting list for the local site for the time being (no 35 and counting   ) - BUT:

- it's a full size plot

- it's lovely and sunny (well, it was today  )

- there's lots of birds singing

- I'm told the neighbours are nice

- and best of all, it's been worked until very recently and NO BRAMBLES

It's full of buttercups and beautiful foxgloves, there are some rather nice beanpoles and some very handy netting been left behind, and if you look closely you can see potatoes coming up and cabbages still standing (will be good for the chickens  :) .  And the soil is GORGEOUS - pushed a stick in and it was like cutting through a lovely soft sponge cake  8)

Sorry, am I sounding over excited?

Anyway:  two questions for all you old hands, to get me started ...

If you could only take one thing to your allotment, what would it be?

And if you could only plant one thing between now and the autumn, what would you plant (flowers allowed as well as veg, I want a cutting patch   )?
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Congratulations on getting a lovely plot. No blisters or backache for you then!
You certainly will not need a watering can for a while!
I would plant runner beans cos I love them.

'pushed a stick in and it was like cutting through a lovely soft sponge cake'

It just rained loads...

You want to roll a piece of soil into a ball, to see. If it forms a ball, somewhat does or not at all. :)

Must take is my trench hoe or azada if it must be called that, good idea not to leave drink behind, either.

One crop :?:    Would not be without onion of some sort and parsley and pots and carrots and peas, a lot of things still play, luckily. 8)

Yeah I know, but some of the plots I've seen in the last 12 months you couldn't get a spade more than a millimetre in even after enough rain to float Noah  :!:     And anyway, it was the soil that convinced sceptical OH so don't spoil the illusion

Mmmm, have already told OH we'll need to get some movable fencing     Thought we could create a retirement home for Dorothy the egg eater - she'd be very happy scratching up the buttercups

Great news Peggy. Must be very exciting.

Those cabbages will be well received. Can't wait for photos.
Don't put your back out first week. Just a bit of digging and lots of planning.

I can vouch for the quality of the soil as I've got the next plot. Only trouble is I've got to get through loads of bramble roots to get to mine (peggyprice's plot wasnt free when I took mine on last year).
