are these veg or god forbid weeds?
« on: June 04, 2008, 20:34 »
Hi everyone need a bit of assistance with identifying whether these are veg or weeds.

All was till today when i looked in patch of mud out the front  where i saw all these plants shooting up. Before the rain nothing was there now theres green all over.

I originally planted fennel, celeriac and carrots in separates trenches which have since been visited by furry friends. In the middles of their business they have moved various seeds around so i think everything underground has been messed up so to speak.

If anyone could help i'd be really grateful, thanks in advance Kerry

Ooooo. In the main weeds - chickweed possibly, but I think there maybe a celeriac lurking in the bottom photo.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Oh, just noticed.

How do you manage to plant just 20 celeriac seed, given their size? I sow mine in trays & transplant, but always end up with 100's of the things!

With all due respect your highness, apart from the one that's possibly celeriac, none of those others in the photo could possibly be carrots, fennel or celeriac!

I have very limited space imagine a speac that is about 1 metre wide and 30 cm long. In other no space at half.

In that metre i  thought put 20 in might get at least 5 if i'm lucky. Think i need a plot

How easy are celeriac and fennel to grow? How long do they last over the winter? Daft questions i know im trying to plant winter veg for over Christmas alongside Jerusalem artichokes in tubs! Hope it works :)

Thanks again everyone :)

Doing fennel for the first time, so can't answer that. So far so good, but not got to maturity yet! If I don't know, I won't guess!

Celeriac I find quite easy, but as I said, I start it in seed trays first. It will quite happily sit in the ground all winter.

I'm struggling with fennel as it seems to be very prone to bolting.

Also rather fast growing, if you want it for Christmas, hm, try to sow end of summer and see, but they get ruined in the gloomy season.

Pick off any that are not in your seed drill location and any others that look the same. Let any others develope and see. You can normally see a line of plants comming from your drill. The others will be weeds.
