There may not be a cure Peggy  :(

If the other hens are laying ok then their calcium level is good.

If you use a roll away nest box the at least their eggs will be safe !

OK - and there is no problem that cannot be solved, so am going to sleep on it - at least now I know what the problem is that NEEDS solving

Thanks all, for input, advice and support
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Hi. This seems to be the same problem as i have got with my hen.  I posted about this a couple of weeks ago and have more or less given up, what i do at the moment is make a soggy bread mixture (1 slice bread & water) mix in a scoop of limestone flour and mix that into the layers pellets so i know she is getting it,  whispering now,  have had an egg the past 2 days with a slightly harder shell Hope this could be the start of something good

mmm - same here - the egg was broken and I actually caught her in the act eating it.  Worse - so was Jean, my Welsummer     Thankfully, she laid later and didn't eat her own egg ...

So, I think it has to be retirement to a cosy little home in the country for our Dorothy ... watch this space

that's the point, i've got so many 1 more wouldn't make a difference, chickens are easy to look after, it's the horses that take up all my time, having said that, my dads away, the kids are at their dads, the house is well on the way to becoming a Kim and Aggie candidate i've a million and one things to do, and i haven't done anything, nothing at all, spent all day pottering around messing with the hens............

tell a lie, i have done one thing, ages ago i bought a hanging basket with the intention of hanging it outside the porch, my dad didn't like it much, he said it made the farm look like the Ponderosa, so i took it down, today i decided it might look quite nice hanging on the front of the chicken house......................................

got a phone call today, someone called Chris from compassion in world farming, that's 4 pounds a month i've just spent, i did try to say that i thought maybe i have done my bit with 66 hens that otherwise wouldn't have made it, but he reminded me there are thousands of birds who need help and talked me round. need to sell more eggs......

I think you could be right, Foxy.  She seemed to be packing a suitcase when I went to tuck them up tonight; think she might be going somewhere nice for her holidays

Sounds like you do enough to assist disadvantaged animals. They shouldn't prey on people who care. Get the selfish ones
