potatoe trouble ?
« on: June 02, 2008, 13:20 »
I am a complete novice at this game and a few months ago i put in a raised bed made of reclaimed railway sleepers and filled it with a mix of top soil and compost. I have potatoes, onions, carrots and beetroot planted and all are doing fine. The tatties are Desire and look really healthy, however some of the leaves have a brown glossy stain on them, :cherry:  should i be worried

No, its been really warm of late. I have the same type in a tub nearby and they look really strong and are begining to flower. Could it be anything to do with the fact that the beds are made of reclaimed (creosoted) sleepers ? excuse the spelling......

I have heard of a few stories regarding treated railway sleepers leaching chemicals into the soil and veggies in beds.

Is the stain not a fungus or virus of some sort? Any pics?

Just had a look at the spuds, I recon that my problem is that the leafs have been burned by the preservative on the sleepers and nothing more.At the end of the day, anything that I get from this bed and my tubs and planters this year will be a bonus

And it's great fun :tongue2:  :tongue2:  :tongue2:
