I think i've spoilt the girls
« on: May 29, 2008, 00:44 »
When I collected my girls to bring home i noticed they were fed pellets,  I'd already bought mash so thats what I fed them, trouble is they were eating twice as much as recommended  in one of my books and they just couldn't get enough...it was starting to look expensive and half of it would be tossed all over the floor, so I bought them pellets but they won't touch them  they just sulk, have I spoilt them and should I insist they eat the pellets or should I go back to mash? :?

If you have some mash left, I would wean them off the mash and onto the pellets over a week or so and then stick with the pellets, mis the two together until there is more pellets and hopefully they wont notice the change.

My new exbatts couldn't figure out what to do with the pellets last nights they just spat them out but I'm afraid they will have to get used to them as i'm not buying 2 lots of food.

As i understand it they wont starve themselves, you just have to be constant and they will get the message in the end

Good luck

You may want to keep some mash though in case you have a poorly hen at any point. I read about ex-batts that they are fed on mash and when feeling 'down' or poorly they revert to mash rather than pellets.

One of my dogs gets bored with his food now and then but if I just ignore him he eats eventually! lol they won't starve themselves, and my girls had a stage of tipping the pellets around the bowl..they don't do it now.

They won't starve themselves but will hold out for the food they want rather than just eat what's on offer.  Takes a few days but they will get the message  :!:

swop feeds gradually so they get used to it and best not give many treats while getting them onto the food  you want them to eat...eg no corn lol  :?

Wean them off the mash by mixing any remainding mash in with the pellets and they will slowly be transversed onto pellets, or you could quite simply just give them pellets, and then its there own decision wether to eat them or not, they will soon get hungry
