CARROT ROOT FLY QUESTION !
« on: May 28, 2008, 21:18 »
I have just been given some scaffolding netting and was wondering if its okay as protection against carrot root fly? The netting is a fairly dense weave but will let rain through.  I have no idea what this fly looks like and how big it is !!

the fly would have to be the size of a budgie    which they are not but hey, it will keep off the bigger prey.

Are we talking debris netting, jazzbyrd, which has a very fine mesh, much smaller than a budgie????!!!!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks Richy !! its seems too good not to be of some use on the allotment! Do you think it would be good to use as shading for lettuces etc?

I've got some on order from here:

HERE

It's over a tenner cheaper when you include postage.

Go on - now tell me it's even cheaper somewhere else!

I did find this company that sells it in 3m wide rolls also. It works out cheaper per sq metre, but thought it would be too cumbersome.

I am really no expert, but I have the same Debris Netting (from the same place) and was going to use it to protect my carrots as the fleece (that nearly caused a divorce to erect) blew away in the wind!

I am prepared to take a chance.

Not seen it in the flesh so to speak so can't say as to it's suitability for carrot fly, but it's cheaper & much stronger than the run of the mill netting that I keep ripping.

50m will actually only make me 4 lengths of allotment width, so it'll just about right to keep those ******* pigeons of me peas!

Just to resurrect this.

Yes it is fine meshing & should keep out the carrot fly. As it's suitable for stopping bricks falling on people it's very strong indeed.

At only about 60p a metre, it seems good value. A lot heavier than fleece or Enviromesh though, so it needs support to keep it from squashing the plants.
