Courgettes
« on: May 28, 2008, 17:19 »
Hello, I have to admit, mines a garden rather than an allotment, but this site was pointed out to me on Scottish Slimmers.

I have recently started to grow my own - tiny white turnips were lovely.

However, my courgettes are now around 2 - 3 inches long, some of the flowers are about to come out, but the actual courgettes are quite thin.  Ok being, thick, when do I know they are ready please?

Any help much appreciated, I am growing 3 plants in a grow bag in the greenhouse as it can be a wee bitty nippy where we live!

Many thanks
Sandie - loving living in Bervie.  Suffer many pink fluffy moments, Viking re-enactor and new to the grenhouse and garden

I like them smaller than you can get them in the shops 4-5".

9" isn't a courgette any more, it's a marrow!!

It's a mtter of personal taste really; try them bigger, try them smaller, and decide how you like them. :)

There are two of us at home and I have planted 5 Courgette plants.
Will this be enough to feed us?

It will definitely be enough to feed 2 of you even if you only eat courgettes and nothing else when they are cropping  :D

I tried this once with a couple of varieties, they didn't store too well, maybe a couple of months or till Christmas, but then, a marrow or a winter squash is also much nicer.

I'd rather put them into chutneys, etc.
