WARNING - BLIGHT ALERT !!!!!!!
« on: May 28, 2008, 16:42 »
A Smith period has occured in my postcode CV7 today according to Blightwatch.

Everyone get the sprayers out :!:
I can feel a repeat of last year coming on

Definition of Smith period according to blightwatch:
At least two consecutive days where min temperature is 10ºC or above and on each day at least 11 hours when the relative humidity is greater than 90%.

You sure its CV7? I found a couple of incidents on CT7.

We got blight really bad last year, and it even got my polytunnel toms.

What do you spray with? I've never had blight on toms. Have been worried about the recent bad weather though. :(

i've been reading up on what to spray toms with as both a preventitive and a remedial; cure and its from what i can gather there are 2 types, copper sulphate (bordeuax mix) and mancozeb (dithane).

does anyone have any more info about what to spray? and when?

also, i see the dithane is quite expensive (around £5 for 6 sachets).  i've seen on ebay 100g of mancozeb for orchids which comes from thailand but only takes a week in the post, reckon this is any good?

I sprayed with dithane last year after my toms went down with blight and did save some of them. This year I am doing it as preventative with dithane, sprayed 2 weeks ago. Have sprayed again tonight. Dont know what else to do, will probably kill them with over spraying.
Its a lot cheaper in Wilkos.

You can't possibly over-spray in this weather, as it is here now, anyways, it just gets washed off.

Blight is only outdoor toms right?

No, it's spread by airborne spores, so can be blown in,  but greenhouse ones are less susceptible as they are more sheltered, in particular from the rain.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I lost nearly half my potatoes last year Jen and about 15% of my toms, but with the rest I just kept taking off any leaves that were looking a bit sick and it seemed to contain the problem, so i still got a good supply of tomatoes, but I ran out of frozen ones in Februaryish!!!! So they didn't last me as long as they usually do!!!!

My polytunnel toms caught it last year, but the polytunnel is just at the end of my veg plot, so the spores must have blown in and spread , mostly along the ones on the back row which is the most humid bit.
