Sowing carrots in wallpaper paste
« on: May 27, 2008, 12:49 »
Hi,
I have been reading for years that the easiest way to sow carrot seed is to mix it with wallpaper paste and squirt it from a toothpaste tube or syringe. Each time I have read about it the article says use wallpaper paste without fungicide.

Now I thought I would have a go this year, but I can't find any paste without fungicide. Does anyone have a source please?

Thanks

Ian

I wouldn't bother cos carrot seed is not difficult to get to grow. The wallpaper paste is just gonna be soooo messy. What a faff.  I can imagine if I were to do it the icing bag would burst and there'd be paste all over the place but none where I wanted it

Sorry to be negative, I'm not usually  :D

The advantage of this method is that the seed is germinated before it goes in the ground, no worrying "Is it ever going to germinate?" ;)  If you can't get the right sort of paste maybe you could make a paste to the same consistency with flour and water, like you make custard. Make sure it's cold again before you add the seeds though.

Incidently, some seed I sowed a couple of weeks ago isn't showing yet but some I planted a few days later is, but it's a different variety. (First lot was Early Nantes second lot Autumn king.) How much longer is it worth waiting?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Thanks all.

My early Nantes has only just started showing and I planted that 4 weeks ago. My next sowing will be Autumn King also, but there is plenty of time yet. I planted Autumn King last year second week of July and with the mild autumn got a good crop out of the ground in November.

Another reason for the carrot paste medium was to more evenly space out the seeds, which we all know are too fine for heavy fingered gardeners.
As for germination, carrots will sprout only when the ground is warm enough to their liking and no sooner. You can plant 6 weeks early or 1 week ahead of warm weather and they'll all sprout at the same time - in warmth.
