Hi all, i am very new to this grow your own lark, what i am after is a list of veg (seed & plant) that should or should not be put in peat. Can anyone help as it doesn`t always say on the pack.Thanks :oops:

Most stuff will grow in peat, some like a bit more drainage so for them you mix in sand or perlite, but don't think this applies to any veg, I'm pretty new to 'this veg lark' though. On the other side of the coin though there's not much that has to be sown in peat, either, again don't know of any veg that has to have peat.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Thanks Woodburner, Your advice is very much appreciated. I got giving a bag of peat and i thought i had better use it and at the same time i didn`t want to waste it on something that didn`t really need it. thanks again :)

Are you thinking of planting into peat alone? I think you'll find it's not got a lot of nutrients.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I add sharp sand to peat, up to 50% for some mediums. I never use peat based composts on their own . I always  mix in some sharp sand. A good all rounder would be 75% peat, 25% sharp sand and John Innes base fertiliser.
