Any silkie info/advice for newbie
« on: May 26, 2008, 20:50 »
Hi everyone,
On Wednesday I get to choose my very own Silkies and bring them home. Problem is, Hubby has put his foot down and said I can only have little girls as he doesn't want any surprises when cracking his egg in the frying pan
I've read that it is near impossible sexing Silkies as chicks and the ones we're getting are 6 wks old. Does anyone know of a way (roughly) to tell the girls from the boys?
Or a way to keep both sexes (my preference   ) and a happy husband at breakfast time?

its easy silkie,

get what YOU want, pretend its what HE wants.

if any turn out to be boys, just say they are girlies practising their singing.

deny all knowledge and as a last resort blame the fairies at the bottom of the garden :D

and with or without a boy, the eggs will taste just the same.

ive only ever had a frizzle and poland boys, so can say how loud a silkie would be, lots of others do tho.

mdueal... i know has silkies.

they do start at dawn, which is very early in the summer months.

unless you want to breed them, a cockerel isnt needed

dont think silkie boys are any different to others. i could be wrong
but my boys always sing when they feel like it all day and evening, must drive the neighbours loopy but no complaints yet lol.
eggs is eggs you will only get babies in them if the hen sits on them so no suprises that way........ :) i have had boys mixed in with my girls for about 3 years now and the only eggy suprise i get is when i have  new hens in lay and get double yolkers yummy.

have fun hope the faries dont get into too much trouble!!

Thanks Babe and Netty, hubby read your replies also, so that dilemma is sort of resolved   I will post some pics of them as soon as I have them.
Also rescuing some batteries beginning of August.... any ideas on what sort of breeds these may be?

Wouldn't rechargeable be the most environmentally friendly option??
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

could add to those some volt ratings, and you'd have a full set of names!

Oh we are just too bad.

On a serious note, well done for rescuing some ex-bats. We started off this journey - well i did - with the intention to rescue some, and will do eventually. Hubby isn't quite so keen, and our house isn't really big enough for too many more. But once we have the bigger house I hope to add at least 2 ex-bats. :) we have 2 farms not far from us, so it won't be hard to get hold of them. :( There are a bunch of local riders grouping up to get some at the moment so that's good news. :)

Are you sure you've thought this through, Porffor?  I'm not sure how well chickens take to travelling horseback, they can't get the hang of the 'knees in heels down' routine, and you'll struggle to find hard hats to fit them ...
