Growing rhubarb by the 'government' method.

i.e. keep 'em in the dark and feed 'em on, well, you know what! I've read elsewhere that covering rhubub plants to eliminate light produces stems which are sweeter tasting and more tender, can anyone vouch for this. We've several plants on the allotment we've just taken over so I've, ahem, 'obtained' an old dustbin which was sat at work and was surplus to requirements (honest! ) an popped it over the top of one of them. Has anyone else tried this and what results did you get please? :D
Blimey! You mean you can *grow* things in soil?

It's usually done early season to bring the rhubarb on quicker.

Tried it once, not impressed & it knackers the plant up for next year, as you've got to let it recover. I've got an early variety which produces just as quick as forcing my other crowns.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

This year I would leave them uncovered and just mulch them with a bit of compost/rotted manure. You could try forcing one next spring but I've found mine produce loads anyway so its not really necessary.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

"Goverment method," thought that mean't being kept in the dark, bled dry, fed S*** and then expected to support every other light and nutrient grabbing scummy weed on the plot!!!!!! :D

forcing rhubarb

its well worth it, but not now, let one of the crowns build up its roots, ie pick it not and in mid january cover it and dump fresh muck around the bin. The sticks will be earlier and tastier than any outdoor stuff. I love rhubarb, I've got 12 crowns every year I force 3, rest 3 and pick the other 6 normal style.
