Loganberries
« on: May 26, 2008, 06:21 »
Hi, we've recently taken over an allotment with some established planting on it, one of which is two rows of Loganberrys (do you call them plants or canes?). Having never encountered a Loganberry before I looked them up in The Fruit Expert and it says they aren't really for eating uncooked. My question is, what can you use 'em for? If they're gonna be the sort of thing you can only make jam out of I'd sooner be rid and use the space for veg! :D
Blimey! You mean you can *grow* things in soil?

I've eaten them, perhaps not as sweet as a raspberry, but a bit of sugar puts that right!

There's all sorts of pudding & pies you can make with them if you don't want to jam them, but we do that with some & it's excellent.

When Mrs. DD took on her plot there was a bush at one end where it was crowded out with weeds & she wanted it out. I persuaded her otherwise & now, having been given a chance, it's a really heavy cropper.

It's your plot, so the decision is yours, but I wouldn't mind betting there's  few folk on here would like to take it off your hands, if that was possible!

You could always just take one row out, as you've got two.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Leave them in for a year and see whether you like them or not. They are pretty rampant so they do need tying in to wires. I like them personally, usually don't get off the plot. But loganberrty and rhubarb crumble is very nice.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

You can make a variety of jams, a cheese (apparently) and a couli.

According to my jam, preserve and chutney book.
We use chemicals in this garden, just as god intended

Mmmmm - loganberries are divine  :D One reason for my getting an allotment is so that I can grow them. Even better than raspberries IMHO.
