Look at the spuds go!

"Me spuds are growing like little rocket powered home guards!

So far, so good, just a few minor nibbles in a few leaves, but I think I'm going to have to get the defences ready.

The aptly named Home Guards are going to have to be vigilant - night and dawn raids are expected!"

These were planted out on April 2nd if I recall correctly. With a bit of luck, we'll be enjoying some tasty earlies in a few weeks.

The slugs/snails have unfortunately started to take an interest, so I'm going to have to get out this weekend, regardless of weather and get a few traps in place to start of with.

My one concern is the density of the plants - I've really crammed them in tight now I think about it. There's no room between the rows for me to work at all. It remains to be seen what effect this has on the crop.

It's hard to see from the photo, but the spuds go back about 6 foot toward that makeshift fence (there's fields behind) - there's my massive weed patch to the right, which is full of insects, wild flowers etc. - I may need to knock them back a bit so I can get to my spuds!

My missus thinks I'm nuts because I'm getting so excited by all this, but she's supporting me - I reckon once she tastes those home grown spuds, she'll be helping me in the vege patch!
