Brussel Sprouts and Sweetcorn
« on: May 23, 2008, 17:19 »
Hello all.

Unfortunately the pigeons have eaten all my sprout seedlings so I've  bought some young plants to start again.  Will it be alright to put old coke and lemonade bottles over the top of them while they establish themselves and I make a more permanent cover to prevent the pigeons getting them?

I have managed to get hold of some sweetcorn seedlings.  I know I have to put them in a block for pollination - will I have to worry about pigeons with them too?  If so, can I use some coke bottles on them for a while too?

Cheers.

Can do, but make sure they are open on top and pigeons can't reach, a piece of netting or fleece would be much better though.

Pidgeons don't go for sweetcorn, something else might do...

Keep seedlings protected there is also slugs.  Not too choosy them.

I'm not sure about putting bottles over them, someone els may be along to advise you about that.

I just put netting over mine - held up with sticks and bottles:

The young plants could get too hot with a mini greenhouse stuck on top of them.

Also it's a feeble pigeon that can't knock over an empty bottle!

Does it really need to be a dark night?

I have an abundance of pigeons at home and the lottie is apparently well populated too. People say that the poor pigeons keep getting caught under the netting at the lotties though. Aww.

I can see the local population diminishing rapidly as soon as I can net my plots. Mwahahahaha         Pigeon pie anyone?
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

You should see some of the pigeons in my garden! At least two of them are nearly the size of hen pheasants and really sleek too. We wondered if they were grouse until they came a bit close so we could see them properly. They've probably got more meat on them than my silkies!
