Is it too cold????
« on: May 23, 2008, 07:32 »
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can advise....I've had my allotment for a while now and bizarrely, never had this problem. I'm starting off some french beans and cucumbers and courgettes at home (I don't have a greenhouse), and they looked great, getting pretty big, but yesterday I left them outside to start to harden them off a bit, and when I came home, quite a few of the first leaves had shrivelled up.....was it too cold for them? Have I murdered them?
Can anyone advise when would be the best time to put them in the allotment?
Thanks

Firstly welcome Pumpkin10.

You don't say in your profile whereabouts you are, this can help in queries like this.

It was too cold a few days ago & we did suffer some frost damage here, but outside in the day time yesterday, they should have been OK. If they are large, did they have enough water? They could be 'pot bound', but there could be several reasons.

I would get them hardened of ASAP & planted out.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks, I'm in Leeds - it was a bit chilly in the day, but I didn't think it was too bad...
Cheers for the advice - I'm going to just put them in the ground, as they are getting big - they probably are getting pot bound.
Thanks, really appreciate it!

it could have been windy and they've become dehydrated, which can happen really quickly.
