I would just like to update, the things are now 2 and a half foot tall and collapsing, not even a full sized cane keeps them up anymore. I was thinking of getting 4 new grow bags and turning them virtical, cutting the tops of the bag off and putting the plants in there, that would give them waaay more root room. Thats the plan anyway. Itt'l have to wait till friday/saturday though....
what do yuo think?

Large bush tomatoes by the sound of it - all of mine tend to grow an enormous first top flower, mind - , you would struggle forever trying to cordon them, might as well give up early and let them trail about.

What variety, BTW?

With your grow bags it may prove hard to move them, cut a oblong out of a new one and put your original one on top then the roots will grow down into the one underneath. Tomato roots stop growing after about the 4th or so truss is set so don't worry to much.
In the greenhouse I tie string to the roof and grow the tom's up them.

Remember, these are beefsteak tomatoes, they are huge. The biggest plant I have owned so far, and I grew them from seed  8) Makes me so proud

I need to get them out of the grow bag, they are waaay to close together. I can't tell wich plant is which, imagine this, imagine 4, 2 and a hlf foot tall plants, 2 and a half foot wide, less than a foot appart. Now your getting close, these guys need seperating, aside from that, the bag is slim, so the roots have to stop growing anyway :?

I've never grown those, so I can't be more specific, but I think roots only stop growing on pruned, stopped, trained plants.

Know where your coming from chilli I've grown 'em before, I usually grow in pots but now I've a bigger GH they can go direct into the soil, I'd cut through the bags and roots with a breadknife if you are bent on seperating 'em then you could bung 'em in your standing on end grow bags.  :D
