Help!! nothing seems to help this hen
« on: May 20, 2008, 09:33 »
We have 2 balck rocks and 2 warrens.  When they arrived to us 4 months ago they had foamy caramel colour poo.  Vet gave them baycox twice to resolve but one of our black rocks is doing half normal half caramel poo-no longer foamy-seems to happen every few days.
She seem happy enough and is feeding, drinking and laying but her comb is drooping to one side and a little pale.

The chooks are wormed monthly, pen is sprayed for mites and I powder them with mite powder they have layers pellets, corn mix, poultry spice and safe kitchen/veg scraps.  We have also been using citricidal in their water.

I'm at loss and so is the vet-and its costing me a lot! Help!

Have you had a look in the help topics?

Aunt Sally has made one all about poops

http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewtopic.php?t=17568

If you can see one that looks like yours??????  I know sounds horrid but if you can put a photo up the people who know their poop may be able to help.

 :D

Sorry where are my manners???

Welcome to the mad house

Hi Dizzfairy,

Welcome to the henhouse.
A few questions first to help us out -Im sure Aunty will be along soon!
How old are your hens? Are they now laying regulary? Do they free range and what are you worming them with. Does she feel underweight, can you feel her keel bone ompared to the others?Once a month sounds a bit too frequent to me and some wormers are more effective than others. I use flubenvent twice a year Spring and autumn.
Look at this link for find useful information about normal chicken poo and worming advice.
http://www.chat.allotment-garden.org/viewforum.php?f=13

The best additive to help a chickens digestion and immune system is chopped garlic(I use a couple of old cloves in a large drinker about once a week) and apple cider Vineagar in their drinking water. ACV is available at most feed stores.
Also with some breeds it is normal as they mature for their combs to flop over -perhaps a pic could help us?

Sorry for all the questions -you obviously care a lot fro your chooks and the answers will help the others here too!

The poo you're describing (half normal half caramel - bit like a soggy chewed toffee?) sounds like what Aunty calls caecal poo (I think) - I still haven't got round to looking up what that means but its normal - out of five hens I usually find two or three of those every day.
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!
