I had long felt that it is important for people to reconnect with the foods they eat, and whilst i am sorry to say, this would be impossible to completely do i wanted to make the changes that my lifestyle would allow. And for me that was manageing my own allotment and producing eggs and now an experiment with meat. People generally, need to take greater responsibility for the food they eat and conditions in which it is raised. I just wanted to make my contribution to that ideal. Along the way i have discovered that chickens and all their strange ways are addictive and a really great interest to have. I also have two young children and i am keen for them to understand the responsibility that we have to animals - especially those on which we rely on for food.

My reasons were much like Bedifferent (although I have gone for ducks). Started with a veg patch in the garden and that satisfaction of growing your own veg even if it is just a few new potatoes (although maybe it al started with the little lime tree in a pot on the window sill I had at uni that provided enough for the odd G and T that started it). Found that I coulded really contemplate pouring chemicals on the food I was going to eat and not too keen on someone pouring them into them either. Had been thinking about chickens as my aunt had them. A friend said that she though ducks would be more interesting and I agree and that was it. Lovew my girls and wouldn't be without them. They add joy and comedy to even the worst day.
