My first harvest.
« on: May 17, 2008, 21:21 »
Just thought I would share my first pickings with you if you dont mind.

got loads more Toms getting ripe

Pretty chuffed with the tomatoes as you can tell but my onions have been abysmal.  All bolted.  the garlic also has rust but I am hoping to salvage that.  All in all I have lettuce, the peppers are doing quite well, planted melons and all I have to put in is my sweetcorn.  Oh yes - the weeds are doing far better tthan the crops - i wonder why that it

That's a great looking haul Mabel!  :D

Some of my onions bolted this year too, but it is the second year they have been in (started them from seed last year and they were too small to pull up so I left them in for this season).  I've heard that they will bolt if grown from seed which is why people are offered sets instead.

thanks.   I actually grew the onions from sets.  Some I planted late last year and some I planted in about February this year.  Dont know whether it is too much rain as we had soooo much over the winter or what.  They are about the size of large spring onions.  I am using them as and when but they obviously wont keep.  Not too fazed though.

Yes they were Gobs.  I have ended up with a great crop but the mystery seeds that I got off the Farmers merchant have all turned out to be plum tomatoes and I was side shooting them for ages and wondering why they didn't seems to be growing as well as the others until they produced their first little tomatoes and I read on here that they were actually bush ones.(Roma I think)  that will teach me to (a) cadge stuff I dont know what it is and (b) learn to read greek!

wonderful.  8)

Can I ask what the flowers are in your polytunnel? Are they beneficial to the tomatoes as companion plants?

they are just marigolds.  i planted them as a companion plant but think I got the wrong kind.  I have now put in some tagetes too but up to now I haven't had any white/green/or any colour flies in there.  it is open all the time though as it is so warm here.  Have also got some basil in pots in there as well.
