I want to start some runners and french beans tomorrow...

Do I need to soak the seeds tonight?  :?

A lot of people do to jump start them. Personally, I forget about them and they go rather mushy so I just direct seed and immediately water the soil. Personal choice.

My Mum always does, but I never do never seems to be any noticeable difference in germination numbers just Mums seem to start a little quicker

My O.H. wanted to reply to this question , "I do nt start geans off by soaking"

I always think they are a bit fragile when they are soaked and sprouting .

OK if there are only a few required but we plant in hundreds , as we are feeding up to 20 a day.

Straight into the soil ,2 or 3 per station. Then cos the slugs love new shoots , apply slug repellant  whichever way you prefer.

As you can see Jim is a keen motor giker ! He also loves his garden ,look out for his book "Gardening for Newgies "

I have had really good germination with my Runners this year and I didn't presoak at all.

I just filled Richy's paper pots with compost then watered them heavily and then popped the seed into the watered compost and that's it.

I use Terry Waltons method and very good it is too! fill a butty bag half full of compost thats moist not wet, pop your beans in, I put 15 to each bag, make sure they are covered with the compost, expell the air and tie, leave for three to four days in the warmth and you will see the sprout, pot on and they you go, its simple and works. The good thing no mice get them and you throw away the bad ones.

A butty is a sandwich!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
