Cats or Mice
« on: May 13, 2008, 01:07 »
Last year, as a first time allotment plotter, I was plagued by a cat doing doos on our new veg beds; so I sprayed "Get-off" and the cat got off. And I was quite pleased when I discovered that a mouse had stolen a few peas and stashed them in the middle of a potato patch, where they duly grew. I didn't mind this and called him our friendly Farmer Mouse.

:( But now my wife spotted a troupe of field mice playing around in our comfrey patch and was terrified - don't ask me why. But now she is talking to bring back the cat to eat the mice :!:
Or worse still, mouse traps armed with cheese.
From all your allotment experience, can you tell me is there really any danger from these little mice and what would you do if you found a family in your comfrey patch
Former biochemist, now experimenting and having fun. :-)

If they stay in the comfrey and don't get into my peas, I wouldn't care. There's always going to be mice about, imo if you have to resort to traps there should be a good reason (ie, they're eating all your seed/seedlings).

cheers,

Derek

You'll never get rid of mice!  But there is always somebody's cat about doing the midnight patrol!!

Try soaking your peas in meths ... that will put them off!!  :D

Cats poo all over the place, spread disease and kill wildlife.  If they had scales instead of fur they'd be vermin and we'd shoot them.

Mice can cause a lot of damage by eating seeds, growth tips and fruit.

Keep up with the repellent and get some mouse traps.
