Sick chickens
« on: May 13, 2008, 00:14 »
I woke up this morning to find one of my good laying hens dead. She was in her nest and her eyes were solid white. Next to her was her mate rooster. He's not dead, but is almost there. All he does now is just lay. He doesn't have the energy to stand up, eat or drink. What is going on?

Have you examined them for any wounds ?

Could it have been heat stroke ?

Do you still have other birds which are fit and well ?

Couldn't have been heat stroke. For the past 4 days we've had nothing but rain and it has been in the lower 40's. ALL the others are absolutely fine. My poor rooster died this morning. He didn't make it through the night.... I had their funeral earlier  today.

It's been baking hot here, that's why I suggested it.   Is that 40 F or 40 C - one is quite cool the other very hot

Are you in a different country ? It would be a good idea to put your approximate location into your profile so we can adjust our advice.

They are all doing very well. My egg production has severely slowed though. I was getting a good dozen a day, now it's down to 3 a day. Maybe the death of their two fellow companions startled them?
