What on earth could this weird seedling be?
« on: May 12, 2008, 15:43 »
A few of these funny little seedlings have appeared in two of my veg beds. They are near where I have planted carrots or parsnips - but I don't think they are either of these  :?:

Any ideas folks? Please don't laugh at me if it's something stupidly obvious

I used the macro setting on my camera so it looks huge. It's actually about 1.5 inches tall!

LOL! I know! I promise it's not a wind up though. I've found 4 of them and pulled out all but one of them as my other half is convinced they're weeds.

I have something that looks very similar to that on my allotment and was wondering what it was myself, ... the one on mine though is a little bit furry and sticks to your hand when you pull it up. Does yours do this?

Hmmm, no - it's not furry and it doesn't stick to your hand Topsie. That sounds like 'Cleavers' or 'Goosegrass'. Yes CQ - it is weirdly rubbery - californian poppy is the closest I got in my attempts to identify it from 'Googling' too. I do have a packet of californian poppy seeds and I sowed some right up the other end of the plot last weekend. However, they haven't germinated yet! It's all very mysterious. Perhaps I'll pot the remaining mystery seedling up and bring it home and see what it grows into!

leave it where it is amongst the veg cos it's a good one for hoverflies and adds a welcome splash of colour to the veggies

Well, I happen to have a load of Eschscholzia seedlings, they don't look like that to me. Might be just the macro or a different variety, but for all sanity they are feathery, very much, the leaves are like needles, sort of thickness, also, the seed leaves are rather much more rounded.

Can be any other type of poppy or whatever, unfortunately, I have no positive to put in place.

It looks familiar but the only poppies I have are hairy leaved. Might it be feverfew?

I sure hope they are weeds. I have loads on my plottie and not in striaght lines but all over. I lloked on a weed identification site at this place http://www.dgsgardening.btinternet.co.uk/weedseedgs.htm and it tells me they are parsley piert. Hope they are not flowers or anything as there were hundreds and i weeded tham all out!

I wondered about parsley piert too - in that pic the leaves still don't look as rubbery though do they? I hope it is poppies - that would be lovely! It's just so odd that they've only appeared near where I've sown parsnips and carrots.
