You need to use slug pellets its the only sure way to get rid of them. I have never seen a bird eating a dead slug so the danger to birds is non exsistant. I dispose of all dead slugs . In the end the slugs get smaller and smaller as you kill off each generation and you will then have a few slug free years. Then as soon as you spot their damage start all over again.

my allotment in holland is all sand  and the slugs do very well indeed!!!
