Help, when can I plant out chillis and Toms
« on: May 07, 2008, 13:08 »
Can someone please tell me when it will be Ok to plant out my chillis and toms?
I have had them on a windowsill and they are about 10 inches tall now, I have just moved them into a little plastic greenhouse, but want to transfer into pots and growbags outside. Its been really hot here the last 5 days, but am worried it will be to cold for them outside at night time.
new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

I wouldn't plant then out until I could guarantee no more frost, which for me will be first week of June. You might be OK a little earlier than that but I wouldn't risk it yet.

My windowsills are being taken over right now but I'm hanging on

Chillies cant take night temps below 10c, so only when your certain that it wont go below 10c. I am currently growing some, I will only put them outside when its warm and very sunny, then bring them in at night. Just to be sure.

I was wondering the same thing as my tomato plants have flower buds on and are quite big, I live in Wiltshire.

This will be the first time I've grown them in the ground at my plot.  I've usually grown them in pots at home.  Wish me luck!  (Any tips for this gratefully appreciated)

I don't think there is summer here when the night temp wouldn't go nearor under 10C.

There is fleece and cloche.

As said before, I wouldn't put out until definitely no more frosts. We put tomatoes out end of May one year as the weather was lovely and then at the beginning of June a frost killed them. Last year we had a frost on 30th May so I will be waiting until mid June.  :)

Well, last night was about 13 here. Night temps in the summer should rarley dip below 12. I know because I had chillies outside from May last year.

The toms are going out on our allotments - that is by Turkish people who don't mess about when it comes to tomatoes. So if you're on a nice sheltered site in cosy London - go for it.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

I fully agree with TheChilliMan and I have a variety of chilli outside now under a small plastic cover at night, ranging from Big Jims, Habs, Purple prince and explosive embers.

In the same area I have some harlequin tomato plants and they are doing fine, I must say though I do keep a eye on the BBC weather site which gives a 24 hours forecast. Just in case I need to wrap the little monkeys over night.

Be brave, the weather in May has been amazing so far.

I'm sorry folks, I just tried to be polite there, thing is I have thermometer and weather forecast, we had ground frosts most of June last year. That's for fact.

If chillies would not cope under 10C, we could not grow them, simple as it gets. 8)
