Im sure Ive got a broody hen....
« on: May 05, 2008, 10:24 »
She's been sitting in the same nesting box for 2 days now and refuses to move. She gives me the beady eye, and goes for me, and her neck feathers come up if I get too near her. Ive put water and food by her box, but I dont know how many, if any, eggs she's sitting on.
Anything else I should be doing? This maternity thing is new to me.

Thanks,

Mary.

she's broody.
Do you want her to be? Will the eggs (if any)  be fertile?
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

If Monty's been doing the bizz then they are fertile. Yes, I'd love some chicks. I'd love to know what she's sitting on. As far as I can tell she hasn't moved all day today.

She will come off the nest in the mornings to poo and drink and feed. So long as she is not too aggressive there is no reason why you can not put your hand under her and feel for the eggs. If she has a very hard peck just put some gloves on. Make sure there is plenty of fresh water and food available, mixed corn is quite filling and slow to digest. If you do see her come off the nest do not worry if she is off for 5 mins or so and the eggs get cold.

if you want to have a look, wait till its dark. if using a torch, make the beam red if you can, keeps them calm.

and if possible put her in her own quite dark space. i have a seperate maternity block ( well 2 now, as of this weekend)
