it's all babes fault
« on: May 05, 2008, 00:54 »
for four years since we moved to the village where I was brought up my lovely wife has wanted chickens I have explained that they are time consuming and not repeat not pets.
Then Alison saw the post I did about Babe and she thought that Iwas being horrible so I showed her some of babes post including the one in the photo comp where she described her chicks as pets not kept for eggs or meat.
Now Alison wants some chicken with furry legs like we saw at Newark show two years ago.
O.K. how am I supposed to find chickens with furry legs do I how do I look after them. :?:

hi alison,  :D

if you want fluffy legs, there are Brahma's, cochin's, Faverolles, silkies, pekins, sultans.............

bark in their run, will stop them getting muddy legs when its wet.

absolutely easy to look after and make WONDERFUL pets, and so many pretty breeds to choose from.

im sure bimbler will fall in love with them, when they arrive

ask any questions you need too, no matter how sill in the hen house, there's lots of wonderful help and advice in there.

I've moved this topic to the Hen House because that is where you will need it to be when you post the pictures of your lovely new pet chickens Blimber and Alison  8)

HI AGAIN LADIES Alison liked the replies but has asked me to ask you
1) how much space do we need for six birds.
2) Do the breeds listed by babe lay eggs.
3) do we need a cockral to get eggs
4) do they cost a lot to feed what do they eat.
5) apart from a hut, wire run, food and water bowl what else do we need to get started.
6) we have two westies Meg and Jethro is this likely to be a problem.
     Thanks Tim and Alison

1)6 birds neeed a 10foot by 10foot area
2) Yes ALL chickens (hens pf course) lay eggs
3)No you don't need a rooster for eggs
4)I dont know hoe much food cost overseas but not much here. You can buy food from a local feed store
5)Thats all you need and youll learn as you go
6)No sure what a westie is......  but i live in America so it must be a term used by you
-If life gives you lemons find someone who got vodka and have a party
-If it doesn't fit;force it. If it breaks; you needed a new one anyway
-Borrow money from pessimist; they don't expect it back

This is a westie:

Dogs should not be left alone with chickens.  If your dog(s) are in the garden on their own the chooks should stay in their run.  If the hens are to range around the garden the dogs must be closely supervised until you are sure they won't try to chase them.

Mind you.... think carefully about how many hens you'll need, 'cos I've only got 3 hybrids and when they're in full swing and give an egg each a day I'm quickly innundated and have more eggs than I know what to do with and there's only so many egg meals you can eat in a day!

You'd be popular with the neighbours though!

I dont think westies should be a problem after a careful introduction and initial supervision. A friend of mine has a westie - great little dogs and so full of character! He bounds into the garden.....then bounds out again!followed by a cockerel whose about the same size so funny!!      But I know he would never hurt them.
Go for the chooks you'll love em!

ps I have faverolles and cochins both have gorgeous fluffy feet and lay super eggs!
