Am trying to grow red cabbage for the first time this year.

I managed to germinate seeds indoors but they are now dead (I cruelly put them in the outdoor greenhouse before they were ready, I think  :oops:  )

Is it too late to start a fresh batch off in pots, or shall I simply try and locate some plants to buy?

Don't panic. Sow in cold frame.

Red cabbage are something I would never consider starting indoors, afterall, they can be sown directly in the ground. It may be that you had weak plants as you'd grown them somewhere too warm and the shock of moving them finished them off.

It's not that it was too soon, but they should have been in that unheated greehouse from the outset.

I think you may just about get away with it by re-sowing, but not anywhere warmer than a cold frame or unheated greenhouse, if you want sturdy plants.

i was talking to neighbour about cabbages,  he said he'd had no sucess and thought our soil was the problem being too light - could this be the case?  he said he couldn't get the plants to  heart up.

It's true that brassicas in general prefer a heavier soil. Try walking up & down it a few times before planting.

oh dear...... so my beautifully no leggy happy little plants that i was so pleased with may all be wasted.........  i must have around 60......
