Advice on my seedlings
« on: May 03, 2008, 18:03 »
I have a couple of questions about my seeds that I have of my peppers, leeks and toms.

My tomatoes seem fine but seem to have some brown on the leaves, does anyone know wjat this could be?

My leeks seem to be like long strands of grass, also the compost seems to of developed some moss on the surface, what has caused this?

My Chillis and peppers seem ok but again have this moss growing.

Sorry to be probably asking silly questions but I just want them to be ok.

Many thanks

That compost looks soaking! I'd say you're over watering them. The leeks look fine, they start off like grass and fatten up slowly.

I sometimes get moss on the top of my compost - I think it may be a combination of watering from the top and a bit of overwatering, but my plants are usually successful - never had damping off...(shouldn't have said that out loud should I - asking for trouble!   ) I keep a frost free heated greenhouse, but only set the heater to kick in at about 5 degrees - I seem to get sturdier seedlings and plants that way.

Looks like time to pot on your toms and peppers - they look really healthy.

The "moss" looks like algea, Scrape it off, Chillies dont like too much water, either way the soil is too wet. The leeks are probably very young. I noticed some white on the soil in the corner of the final picure, which says to me that you let it dry out, dont let that happen to the chillies.  The tomatoes look fine, leaves will die as they grow, same happened to me but myne are doing great. Aside from that, the tomatoes look too packed. I'd split them up if possible.

Moss naturally develops on undisturbed damp soil surface, nothing to worry about, but as all point out, keep them a bit drier.

It is a crowd, especially the tomato. But that's the thing with all of them, plant them up individually all next year, now, you do as you please, as you are so close to planting out time on your location might not be worth bothering them twice at all.

all seems like a bit of a football crowd there....... and a bit on the damp side, when watering at this stage you dont have to saok 'em just keep the compost damp, dont let it dry out either.  I tend to use a John Innes No1 as its loam based rather than a peat/coir type.

I would pot up the toms in 4" pots individually, picking the strongest ones, I always do my toms in 24 pot plug trays with two seeds per plug and when they come thru thin out the weaker one.....

I would harden those leeks off & get them outside to fill out, kept in that window they willgo very weak & leggy.

Agree with potting up the toms - too crowded & they also are going leggy.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
