Why not be daring and just stop digging altogether?  the only digging i do these days is to harvest my spuds, parsnips (when I manage to grow any) and carrots.  Let the worms do the work.  I know MJ disagrees with me so no need to comment Munty  

I'm 100% with you there milkman.   And I wouldn't put a rotavator anywhere near my garden for fear that it would chop up the worms.

I'll concede that other soil types might need different handling but the no-dig approach works just great for me.

i dont disagree with ya milky. just cant be bothered to worry about the werms n other things that are supposed to do the work i know a machine or digging""  supposedly  "" damages the soil but i make up for that by dumping tons of muck in ,and besides im not into eco stuff , farmers have been doing it with antler horns n sticks for thousands years hon so its good enough fer me
