Righto. As soon as I'm free I'll go and upend her and massage again. When I tried it yesterday nothign came up. She just got very flustered (who can blame her?) so I let her go.

Will follow up with a flubenvet course.

You're probably right Bodger.  Did you watch Robs video?  Doesn't look like gape worm to me, how about you ?

No. Missed the video will nip and check it out.

Mmmmmmhhhhh ! Just checked it out, something is  obviously irritating the bird. It does looked a bit puffed up but without actually getting hold of its crop , its tricky to tell.

I got a load of birds crop bound once, when I put them abruptly onto pigeon corn and they hogged it. The various split peas went down a treat and they became crop bound. You could feel a hard ball of pigeon corn that they were really struggling to digest.

If the crop feels extended and mushy, it will be a blockage caused by something such as long strands of coarse grass and the massaging and the use of gravity ( hold the bird upside down) and causing it to puke is probably the best route to go on.

But if the lump is hard and won't soften with massage. It's vet's knife or cooking pot.

Any idea why only one bird is affected Rob ?

Have you had a look down her throat to see if there is anything stuckdown there  :?:

As far as we can remember, they last had grass clippings several weeks ago, before we knew they were bad for them.
Since then pellets, greens, worms and nibbles of lawn grass through the wire fence !

Her crop was very hard, gritty and not bloated this morning. It could have been normal, and just a bit of grit I could feel.

I'll try and get a look down her throat and give her a massage.
I presume while she is laying, looking healthy and eating and drinking that she won't be suffering ?
If she is, I think it will have to be a visit to Annie & Brian.

Just had another go at massaging. She's taking both hands to hold her, she's such a fighter that I can't really do much. Tried lookign down her throat but she won't hold her beak open for me and if I try and open it, she just shakes her head away.

To look at her there is absolutely nothign wrong so I think it's the liquid paraffin and wait and see.

They are very strong when they want to struggle aren't they  :!:

I used to wrap my chook up in a towel so that her legs and wings couldn't thrash scratch and flap about.  You've only got the head to deal with then.  Two person job for me.

Nor any muscle relaxant unfortunately  :?

Tried dripping LP using a syringe. Not ahope. She wouldn't even open her beak let alone face syringe and take drips.

Plan B: Dug up some small worms. Soaked in LP.
Oh we're best friends now !!  :)

Hope it gets in and helps her out a bit.

Any thoughts on the bicarb ?

I read on another forum (poultrysite maybe?) that you can mix tbsp bicarb with pint of water and administer to loosen crop. Not sure if it causes projectile vomiting or just a bit of a burp

Didn't want to do anything without checking first
