How to get free tomato containers
« on: May 01, 2008, 13:11 »
Just thought I'd pass on a tip which I've used from this month's 'Grow It!' magazine.

Pop in to your local florist or greengrocer and ask for any spare buckets used to store bunches of flowers. I've just picked up 3 fantastic containers this morning, apparently perfect for growing tomatoes - can't believe so many of these normally get discarded so good for environment AND thrifty!

Hmmmm, I tried that. Got tutted at and they said 'Suppose you want them for tomatoes eh? We've had loads of people in after them.' I walked out empty-handed feeling like a cheeky scounger

Still, at least I get lots of free palettes from our local stationery shop  :D

I got some right good tubs from the sarni shop. They're big yellow jobs with tight fitting lids, previously used for mayo

TBH that tip is a non starter. I asked a couple of florists several years ago what they do with their pots once they've sold the flowers. Guess what. . . they re-use them over and over, they cost too much to let go, even then.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Ok guys. You can't have seen a previous on this subject. We've all  been getting them from Morrisons (they now charge 99p) Asda and Tesco. They were free but these places are greedy so that may all change!!
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!

I live right by a market that is open every day except mondays and sundays (and even on those days some stall holders turn up), its an allotmenteers superstore when they are packing up :D loads of goodies to be had if you are in the right place at the right time  little blue trays than can be used as a sieve/weed holder/produce holder/ seedling paper pot holder etc  some days its better than wilkinsons!! :D
Some of the fruit and veg they leave behind at the end of the day often 'looks' a lot better than what we grow, but of course it isnt!
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)
