Help with broad beans.....
« on: April 28, 2008, 16:51 »
Can anyone offer any advice please.......

I planted out my broad beans about 3 weeks ago (having grown them indoors first, hardened off, then planted outside).

They are growing OK at the moment but today I have noticed several of the plants are starting to flower.  Surely this is way too early and the plants are no more than 12-18 inches high at the moment.

Any advice on what I can do to keep them happy or am I stuffed?

Many thanks in advance for any advice!

Cheers!

They will be fine, mine are the same:

Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

washsaint - it's really helpful if you put your location into your profile as the area can affect things.

Noshed's in sunny hot London and a good few weeks ahead of us, although I did see some broad beans starting to flower on our site. I wouldn't worry about it if I was you.

Thanks for the replies.  Last week it got really warm with lots of bees, onions have started going mad and spuds have rocketed up.  So hopefully it's just the warmer weather encouraging stuff to start growing well (weeds are doing very well!!!).

And pigeons have had all my seedlings!!!!

Aha - the sunny south I see  :flower:

Pigeons - have you tried approaching the MOD for some surplus surface to air missiles? I see them on the cables above my plot deciding what they're going to eat for breakfast

Indeed John - unfortunately my wife and kids won't let me take a gun to the beggars!!!!

With the Army just round the corner it would be nice if they could eliminate the pests!!!!!

I've no room to talk, caught one under the netting. Just couldn't kill the terrified bird, so I gave it a stiff talking to before letting it go. Larry still takes the micky out of me about that one.
