Help! - getting new birds to feed
« on: April 27, 2008, 14:08 »
Hi all,

Having problems getting the new birds to feed.

Finally picked up our five 9 week old bantams late yesterday afternoon. We shut them in their house until this morning so they got used to their new home. Opened their pop hole this morning but they wouldn't come out into their run. Their food and water is under cover at the far end of their seven foot run. 'Encouraged' them out into their run after an hour (by picking them up & putting them through the pop hole) and shut the door behind them but they never ventured off the wooden 'patio' outside their pop hole but huddled together & kept trying to get back in. We put some pellets down by them but they just sniffed them and didn't eat them. We gave in after 15 minutes and let them back inside and as yet they still haven't ventured out. Have just put a bowl of water in their house now as we're worried about them dehydrating.

Do new birds ususally take a day or two to come out of their house?

Any suggestions please?

Thanks.

P.

They can take a while to settle down.  Make sure they have water in their house for now.  They won't starve themeslves, they will eat after a day or two.  I presume  they are not in with established chooks.

hi pullet!

love to see pics of your new birds!
Just wondering what they are fed on? Mine would still be on growers at that age.

Yes, piccis please.......
Don't worry they will soon settle down, perhaps put their food nearer so they can see it, then move  it when they know what the feeder looks like. :)

Hi,

Put their food & water in their house this morning & they were all eating & drinking by the time I left for work. Have got all bantams - 2 silver laced wyandottes, 2 buff Plymouth Rocks & a Light Brahma.

Need to check on inserting photo but took a few this morning.
