We just got a car full from a pal - should we construct a mound of pure manure for our fledgling courgettes or would it be better mixed in with some turned over soil ?

I think it's ok as long as fresh muck doesn't come into direct contact with the plant's stem so I put a bit of compost or growbag compo up to the stem of the plant. Once they get going they'll grow away into the surrounding muck

Always better to mix it in, if it's well rotted, you should not have any probs with courgettes though, don't know about the cucumber fruiting in manure.
