Has anyone got Mares Tail yet?
« on: April 24, 2008, 12:05 »
As some of you will know I spent most of last season hand weeding all the Dock, Couch and Mares tail out of my new plot.
Some of the Dock and Couch has returned but at a very manageable level, but so far no Mares tail.

Is it just to early for the Mares Tail or have I done the seemingly impossible and got rid of it?

Mine's not showing yet, but having done some digging yesterday, I know it's still there lurking!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

:? I think you will find it's a little early for Mares Tail to show yet, but it has a horrid habbit of growing underground first before raising its ugly self above ground. Very hard to get rid of. Swede.

It's started coming up on our site. I've been trying to dig out the weeds on my plot so it's not coming through as strong. On some of the adjacent plots and paths it's now back with a vengence.  I think what is more worrying is a clump of Japanese Knotweed which has taken hold just outside our site. If that spreads then the horsetail is the least of our worries.

Even after all the bins full of the stuff we have taken to the Council tip over the past three years, we've still got it and it going strong.  It's had Roundup, Deeproot, SBK on patches of it but it just reappears.  Sorry to put a dampner on it.

Unfortunately you have one of nature's survivors. It is pretty much unchanged since this group first appeared about 350 million years ago (compare to flowering plants about 110 and grass about 45 million). One consolation though; the early horsestails included some that reached 15 metres high. Think yourself lucky you don't have an infestation of them!

Greg,

Re the Japanese Knotweed, I'm fairly sure that this is a notifiable plant (or something similar) and the council is under a duty to get rid of it.  Let your council know about it and they should take appropriate steps ...

We have some on our site and a contractor injected the stems with really strong glyphosate (not available to the public) a couple of times.  Did the trick.

I think he nalso eeded lots of protective clothing etc before doing so - I have a sneaking suspicion that if it comes into contact with skin it can burn or blister it  :?:
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

To be honest you have got to admire the Mares Tail.
It was here when the dinosaurs were and has lasted millions of years.
A real survivor (and a real pain in the neck)
