Folklore sayings, red sky at night...etc
« on: April 24, 2008, 12:03 »
:D Trying to get a collection of these together (nothing commercial), with their origins if poss. Just sayings that are related to plants, nature, weather, growing etc
Please can I have some contributions, might be a fun thread anyway :tongue2:

Also, I heard a tale about farmers dropping their trousers and testing the warmth of the soil with their bums, anything like that also please

Thanks

Not really a 'Welcome To The Forums' topic. I'll move it somewhere suitable, as soon as I can think where..... er try 'General Gardening'.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

That's an interesting one!!!!!!   Someone mentioned it the other day, and I couldn't remember what a clout was, so I looked it up and came up with The Phrase Finder!  Here's the link, its good!

http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/till-may-is-out.html

Apparently, clout is clothes and most people think it means don't put your winter clothese away until the end of the month of May, but it also reminds us that May is the flower of the Hawthorn, so could it mean don't put them away until the hawthorn blossoms, which is end April/Early May?

I must read more of these, so yes, please everyone put them all on here.  I think old sayings are really good!  I'll have a think to see what I can remember too!!

If the oak before the ash, there will be a splash
If the ash before the oak there will be a soak.

A farmer should live as though he were ging to die tomorrow, but he should farm as though he were going to live forever!

When sowing peas. my grandfather always used to say 'one for the rook, one for the crow, one to rot & one to grow'.

Munty adds 'and one for the gipsy in the know'.

Not that I'd do it but:
"If you can sit on the ground with your trousers down, it's safe to sow your seeds"

I'm full of useless information!!!!!

He who by the plough would thrive
Himself must either hold or drive.

He that ploughs whle sluggards sleep
Will have corn to sell and keep!

To plough rushes is copper
to plough heather is silver
but to plough bracken is gold

Red sky at night sailors delight, red sky in the morning sailors warning. You don't very often get farmers and sailors in the same place.
I know less today than I did yesterday, and I knew nothing then!
