Opened the coop this morning and there was an egg yolk and a little tiny bit of blood?  All girls seem fine and i had 3 eggs yesterday so all 3 are laying - do i need to worry?
1 x hubby
2 x daughters
3 x chickens
1 x bunny
6 x african snails  . . . . . and counting.

Thanks - What is it then? Just a shell-less egg?  I suppose they're quite knackered poor loves! . . . . 18 months with nothing to do but lay eggs and they haven't cottoned on to the fact that they can retire yet!

Right today i have one hen (Chicken Licken) whose acting strangely    At first i thought she was going broody at she was fluffed up and sitting in the nest box all morning.  So i followed some advice i'd read on here and gave her a cold but gentle bath.  She just stood there and didn't complain once and i put her back in the coop and she just standing completely still facing the corner and doesn't seem to want to move!  -  Now i'm leaping to conclusions here but i expect it was her who laid the dodgy egg yesterday - could it be egg peronitis (sp?)

Whatever your ideas please could you include an idea on how to treat her.

If it's egg peritonitis she will have a swollen abdomen, which on a chicken is the area around their botty.

If she is just quite and sitting down it may be sterile peritonitis which will reduce after a while.  But is she is hot, feel under her wing up near the joint and compare with a healthy chook, the peritonitis will be infected and life threatening.  You then have a decision to make, treat with antibiotics or send to heaven

A chook who has peritonitis and recovers will usually get it again  :!:

I hope that helps Wildey  :)

Dunno if I can ofer any hope but one of ours was just standing staring the other evening (posted a thread) and that night she laid 2 soft eggs.
She's been fine since but apparently the soft eggs make them very lethargic and poorly looking for a couple of hours before they lay.

Hopefully just that. Fingers crossed.

You can only get antibiotics from a vet Wildey.  They often prescribe Baytril.

Thanks everyone she does seem a little better today!  I've laced their water with prebiotics and garlic and she out and pecking so maybe it was the shelless egg that upset her!  Someone still has very running poo so i'm keeping an eye on them!
