Hey all

I have read in several places that if you grow mint you should keep it contained to stop it taking over the garden. How would you do that? I have read that planting it in its own pot would do it, but would this mean it would dry out quicker??

Any advice welcome!

Cheers!

a metal bin with the bottom cut out burried half in the ground is the best way
feed the soil not the plants

Cut the bottom out of a bucket and plant mint in it, then plant the bucket in your plot.  Mint is rampant and planning to take over the world.

I've just got mine in an old strawberry planter, I only water it if it's really dry weather, it's indestructible, comes back year after year, along with the lemon balm that the previous owner obviously liked, can't get rid of that though, much as I've tried!

yes curb its world domination tendencies if you plan to plant it in a herb garden but if like me you stuck a bit along the fence next to the lottie it can be left to its own devices and fight it out with the nettles and other riffraff weeds.... ohyes.... plant several different types as you can get a hell of a difference in flavours, ie mint, spearmint etc.... as for me, last year I bought a Maroccan Mint from a herb guy on a local market, its the best one yet.....

Quarter some strawberries and add chopped mint and some good balsamic vinegar and sugar to taste.  Leave for an hour and serve with ice cream.

Yeah.  At Greenwich Park there's a herb garden, and they must have at least 10 different mint varieties, one of then is Eau de Cologne, smells like aftershave, wouldn't want to eat it though  Just been given a spearmint to add to my collection.  I wonder if lemon balm comes under the mint family, it certainly has the same rampant tendencies!

Love mint! Don't ask me how - managed to kill mine last year!!!! Planted it in the garden, don't know what type it is - from mums garden, though it forms a nice clump it doesn't really go mad, so I planted it in a corner of the garden, did ok at first, then just died!!!

Have now pinched some from a friends garden, will keep it in a pot this time!

It will grow out the bottom of even a 2' deep pit (this is how I got mint in the landlord's lawn onceuponatime; it is surprisingly tolerant of mowing!).  That said, it is easier to pull back a few pioneers so long as you keep on top of it.  I'd like to strangle whoever let it get into my vegetable plot in the garden though - I think putting it on the allotments would be an act of biological warfare.
