dummies guide to chitting sweetcorn please!!
« on: April 20, 2008, 08:24 »
I put some sweetcorn seeds on some wet kitchen paper in a plastic tray about 3 days ago, and left them on a windowsill. No action yet... Am I being impatient? How long do they usually take to chit? Have just put them in the cupboard with the hot water boiler - darker but warmer, I figured. Any advice?

Warmer is better, keep an eye on them as they soon sprout after a few days in the warmth, don't let them dry out, cover with cling film or similar.  :D

Do they have to be chitted???
I sowed mine on Thursday in Richys Paper Pots straight out of the packet.
Will they be okay?

No they don't have to be, just a lot of us do just to make sure they germinate ok I think it also speeds up germination time ?

Mine started sprouting in 24 hours. They're in a lidded plastic plum container lined with kitchen roll, sitting on the kitchen windowsill. Our central heating is at 17
