trimming talons
« on: April 16, 2008, 07:46 »
Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on how to trim a Cockerel's talons? One of my chickens is suffering from feather loss on her back and having checked for mites and infections (she has none), I'm pretty sure the cause is the cockerel covering her and advice from the Internet is to trim both the talons and spurs to minimise this.

Many thanks

Talons is pretty simple - we just do ours with a pair of nail clippers. You can get special animal ones but we just use normal ones. Don't be too drastic as there is a vessel through the middle of the nail. You can usually see where it ends as the nail changes from pinkish to just nail looking.  If you do clip the vessel - damp it off and have matches handy. Strike a match and let it burn for couple of seconds then blow it out and immediately apply to bleeding nail end. This doesnt hurt - it just cauterises the bleeding (which can be alot if t is not stopped). If it doesnt stop straight away, you can do the match thing again.

Spurs - you can trim them in much the same way - on our old cockerel though we had to get bold cutters to him when we rescued him as they were so tough. You can also remove spurs using baked potato. Take hot freshly baked potato from oven and stick spur into it. Then it should just twist off to leave the living nub bit beind and remove the long tough sheath. You will need to look up more detail on google for doing that - cant remeber where i saw the artical off my head.

Sorry thats so long - hope it helped!

If he's a bit struggly you can wrap him in a towel to hold his wings still.  Somepeople also put a large sock over their head which calms them down a lot - a clean one though, you'd not want to knock him out
