Hi all,  I went to a rare breeds auction last week and came home with a pair of orpington (Jubilee) hens.  Delightful they are in appearance and nature.  But only laying little pearls of eggs like bantees. Delicious though.  :) My qestion is-  On the cage at the auction there was a notice "Not Standard"  Can you tell me what this means please :?: Thanks
who cares wins

We'll wait for the piccies then  :D

(meanwhile Shhhh....   don't tell barneyowl that chickens come in two basic sizes - bantam and standard, so I guess his orpingtons could be bantams   )

I had thought of that Auntie but seeing how these girls are much much bigger than my biggest girls, Light Sussex, Cuckoo Maransm Black Rocks etc, I had really discounted that idea.

You weren't meant to be able to see that Barney

Perhaps it was just the label left on the cage from the previous occupants

Not sure that Jubilee is a standard colour in orps -thats what "not standard" usually means and LF would mean large fowl. Could be bantam  though- rare indeed if they are!

I would have thought it meant 'not breed standard' ie there will be some 'defect' in their appearance taht they would be marked down for if you were to show them. This will only be some trivial thing probably - they are very penickety about angle of tail carriage, exact lengths and shapes of feathers etc so as pets/egg layers they will be fine.
